China Umbrella Export Data 2021–2025: Trends, Key Markets and Buyer Advice

Are China’s umbrella exports still growing—and does a lower average export value mean factories should quote lower prices?

The five-year answer is mixed. China exported about 917 million umbrellas in 2025, roughly 53% more than in 2021, but total export value increased by only about 4%. The implied average export unit value fell from about US$4.28 to US$2.91. This signals a shift in product mix and price competition, not a universal fall in the cost of every custom umbrella.

What changed in China’s umbrella exports from 2021 to 2025?

Export quantity expanded much faster than export value. The data compiled for this guide show volume rising from about 598 million units in 2021 to 917 million in 2025. Export value moved from approximately US$2.558 billion to US$2.672 billion.

The strongest value year in this series was 2022, at about US$3.062 billion. Export quantity then continued to rise and reached roughly 961 million units in 2024, while total value remained below its 2022 peak. In 2025, both quantity and value pulled back from their 2024 levels.

Why did export volume grow faster than export value?

The most likely explanation is a changing mix of products, markets and order types. Umbrella export statistics combine many very different products: low-cost promotional umbrellas, compact folding models, straight umbrellas, golf umbrellas, parasols, beach umbrellas and more.

When a larger share of shipments consists of entry-level or high-volume products, total unit count can rise without a similar increase in export value. Competition among suppliers, buyers’ cost targets, currency movements and the balance between basic and premium products can also affect the average.

The 2025 decline is another useful warning. Published trade statistics put 2025 export quantity at about 917.46 million units, down roughly 4.6% from 2024, while value fell about 7.6% to US$2.672 billion. Demand did not disappear, but the market became more selective and price-sensitive.

Does the lower unit value mean a buyer should receive a lower factory quote?

No. Average export unit value is not the same as a factory quotation. It is total declared export value divided by total exported units across many specifications and markets. It cannot tell you the correct price of one particular OEM or ODM umbrella.

A valid comparison must use equivalent specifications. A 190T polyester promotional umbrella with a basic steel frame cannot be compared directly with a 210T pongee automatic folding umbrella, a fiberglass windproof golf umbrella or a large beach parasol.

For a custom order, the real cost structure normally includes canopy fabric, coating, frame material, rib count, shaft, handle, opening mechanism, printing method, number of print positions, packaging, testing, inspection requirements, order quantity and delivery schedule.

Which overseas markets buy umbrellas from China?

China serves a broad mix of mature and emerging markets. In 2024 trade records for HS 660199, major destinations included South Korea, Japan, the United States, the Philippines and Thailand. India, Mexico and Brazil were also important markets. Rankings change when a different umbrella category or customs code is selected.

Japan and South KoreaOften place strong emphasis on finish, packaging accuracy, inspection records and consistent repeat production.
United StatesDemand ranges from promotional programs to retail, golf and outdoor products, with compliance and delivery planning varying by channel.
Southeast AsiaClimate-driven demand is significant, but product type, price position and local distribution models differ by country.
Latin America and IndiaLarge consumer bases create opportunities, while price, durability, import procedures and seasonal timing require careful planning.

For buyers, the practical point is not to copy the specification used by another market. Product decisions should reflect local rainfall, sunlight, wind exposure, retail price, warranty expectations and the customer’s intended use.

What should buyers compare before ordering from a China umbrella factory?

Compare the complete specification and delivery risk, not the headline unit price. A low quote can be genuine, but it may also reflect thinner fabric, a lighter frame, fewer printing steps, simpler packaging, no test requirement or a less realistic production schedule.

  1. Confirm the product category: folding, straight, golf, promotional, children’s, beach or another type.
  2. Lock the materials: fabric specification, coating, shaft, ribs, stretcher, handle and opening mechanism.
  3. Define branding: artwork format, Pantone color, print method, panel count and print position.
  4. Approve a physical sample: review dimensions, operation, appearance and packaging before mass production.
  5. Specify testing and inspection: identify market-specific requirements and who is responsible for each check.
  6. Confirm packing: individual bag, sleeve, carton quantity, carton marks and protection for transit.
  7. Check the schedule: include sample approval, material preparation, production, inspection and freight booking.
  8. Compare landed risk: evaluate rework, claims, late delivery and communication—not only the ex-factory price.

What does the 2021–2025 trend mean for procurement strategy?

Buyers have more supply options, but specification control matters more than ever. High export volume shows that China retains deep manufacturing capacity and a wide component supply base. At the same time, the fall in average unit value shows strong competition and a growing risk of comparing products that look similar in a quotation but are not equivalent in materials or performance.

The safest approach is to issue a clear request for quotation, obtain written confirmation of every important specification, approve a sample and keep quality checkpoints tied to the approved version. If budget must be reduced, ask the supplier to identify the effect of each change instead of requesting an unexplained price cut.

Frequently asked questions

How many umbrellas did China export in 2025?

Published 2025 trade statistics report approximately 917.46 million umbrellas, about 4.6% fewer than in 2024.

What was the value of China’s umbrella exports in 2025?

The published total was approximately US$2.672 billion, around 7.6% below 2024.

Why is average export unit value lower than some factory quotes?

The average mixes many umbrella types, specifications, markets and order sizes. A quotation is based on the materials, construction, printing, packaging, quantity, testing and delivery terms of one specific order.

Which customs codes cover umbrellas?

Umbrellas and sun umbrellas fall under HS heading 6601. Subcategories include garden or similar umbrellas and other umbrellas, so buyers should check the correct code with their customs or logistics adviser.

What information should I send for an accurate custom umbrella quote?

Send the umbrella type, size, quantity, target market, fabric, frame, logo artwork, printing requirements, packaging and required delivery date. A reference sample or detailed specification sheet is even better.
