Guangzhou’s Umbrella Industry: From Handcraft to a Trade and Service Hub

Guangzhou’s umbrella industry did not disappear when large-scale production shifted to lower-cost manufacturing clusters. Its role changed. Guangzhou became a trade, customization and customer-service hub that connects overseas buyers with umbrella production bases across the Pearl River Delta, including our own production base in Taoyuan Town, Heshan, Jiangmen.

What changed?Manufacturing became more standardized and gradually concentrated in specialist production areas outside central Guangzhou.
What stayed in Guangzhou?Buyer communication, product selection, design support, sampling, order coordination and export services.
Why does Guangzhou still matter?The city combines international trade infrastructure, the Canton Fair, logistics access and proximity to mature umbrella supply chains.
What does this mean for buyers?A Guangzhou-based team can coordinate specifications and service while production is handled at a dedicated manufacturing base.

How did Guangzhou’s umbrella industry begin?

Guangzhou’s warm, rainy and sunny climate created steady demand for both rain umbrellas and sun umbrellas. Long before modern factories, the city already had small umbrella-making and repair businesses serving daily urban needs.

One of the best-known names in this history is Leung So Kee Umbrella Factory (梁苏记遮厂). Historical accounts commonly date its founding to 1885 or 1886 on Huiai West Road, now part of Zhongshan Sixth Road. The business reportedly began with umbrella repair and then expanded into handmade cloth umbrellas.

The early workshop model was practical: sales, production and repair could operate from the same premises. Steel ribs, cloth canopies and wooden handles were assembled by hand. Durability and repair service were central selling points because an umbrella was expected to remain useful for years, not one season.

A short timeline: from handcraft to organized production

Mid-1880s — repair and handcraft workshopsLeung So Kee became a representative Guangzhou umbrella business, combining repair, handmade production and retail.
Early to mid-20th century — wider regional commerceGuangzhou’s commercial links with Hong Kong and Macao helped traditional umbrella businesses reach a broader market.
1966 — more organized manufacturingLocal historical accounts record the establishment of the Guangzhou Umbrella General Factory, marking a move from fragmented workshops toward standardized production.
Reform and export era — trade becomes more importantGuangzhou’s trading companies, gift businesses, brand customers and Canton Fair network created growing demand for promotional and custom umbrellas.
Today — coordination in Guangzhou, production in specialist clustersThe city increasingly functions as an order, design, sourcing and service center connected to manufacturing bases such as Heshan.

Why did Guangzhou become a trade and service hub?

1. The city already had strong commercial networks

Guangzhou has long been one of southern China’s major commercial centers. Brand owners, gift companies, import-export businesses and event buyers can discuss a project, compare samples and arrange supporting services in one city.

2. The Canton Fair connects suppliers with global buyers

The China Import and Export Fair brings international buyers to Guangzhou and reinforces the city’s role as a sourcing gateway. For an umbrella buyer, this reduces the need to visit multiple production towns before basic product direction, customization and commercial terms are clear.

3. Guangzhou sits close to Pearl River Delta manufacturing

Umbrella production requires fabric sourcing, frame components, handles, printing, sewing, assembly, inspection and packaging. Guangzhou can coordinate these activities while dedicated manufacturing is carried out in established production clusters with suitable labor, space and supplier networks.

4. Rising urban costs changed the geography of production

As rent and labor costs increased, large-scale manufacturing became less practical in central Guangzhou. Some production capacity moved toward surrounding cities and towns with stronger cost and industrial-cluster advantages. Guangzhou retained the functions that benefit most from its location: buyer communication, product development, sales, design and export coordination.

Trade context: Guangzhou’s official 2024 economic report states that the city’s goods exports reached RMB 700.55 billion, up 7.8% year on year. This does not represent umbrella exports alone; it shows the scale of the trade environment in which Guangzhou-based sourcing and service teams operate.

Does Guangzhou still manufacture umbrellas?

Yes, but buyers should distinguish the business coordination location from the production location. Some umbrella companies have offices, showrooms or service teams in Guangzhou while manufacturing takes place in specialist production bases elsewhere in Guangdong.

That distinction is important. A reliable supplier should tell buyers where sampling, production, quality control and packing are actually handled. “Based in Guangzhou” should not be used to hide the real production arrangement.

How our Guangzhou and Heshan operations work together

Hand in Hand Umbrella Factory has worked in the umbrella industry since 2000. Our business coordination center is in Guangzhou, while our own production base is in Taoyuan Town, Heshan, Jiangmen, Guangdong.

For overseas custom umbrella orders, the Guangzhou team and Heshan production base work together to:
  • clarify umbrella type, size, frame, fabric, handle and target market;
  • review logo artwork, Pantone colors, print position and packaging;
  • coordinate samples and written specification approval;
  • follow production, in-process checks and final inspection;
  • prepare export packing and delivery coordination.

This structure reflects the modern role of Guangzhou’s umbrella sector: customer-facing trade and service capabilities linked directly to a dedicated manufacturing base.

What should overseas buyers verify?

  • Actual production location: Ask where cutting, sewing, assembly and packing take place.
  • Written specifications: Confirm fabric, frame, dimensions, printing and packaging before bulk production.
  • Sample approval: Do not rely only on a product photo or verbal description.
  • Quality-control responsibility: Identify who checks materials, workmanship and packing.
  • Communication continuity: Make sure the team coordinating your order can respond throughout sampling, production and shipment.
