Why Do Custom Umbrella Prices Vary? 6 Factors to Compare in a Quote

By Aihua Chen | Hand in Hand Umbrella

Why can similar custom umbrellas have very different prices?

Custom umbrella prices depend mainly on six factors: umbrella type and opening mechanism, frame construction, fabric and coating, handles and accessories, printing, and actual dimensions. Order quantity, packaging and delivery terms also affect the final quotation. Before deciding which supplier is cheaper, confirm that both quotes cover the same specifications and order conditions.

Two umbrellas can look alike in a product photograph but contain different components. At Hand in Hand Umbrella, we break a sample down into individual specifications when selecting models and reviewing costs. Buyers can use the same method to understand what a quoted price includes.

1. Umbrella type and opening mechanism: define the use first

Start by deciding whether the umbrella should be a straight model or a folding model. For folding umbrellas, opening action and folding format are separate specifications:

  • Opening action: manual, automatic opening, or automatic opening and closing.
  • Folding format: three-fold, five-fold or another structure, with an agreed closed length and packed thickness.

In our sample-selection experience, three-fold and five-fold models are common starting points. For a customer who wants an umbrella for a small bag, we often show a five-fold option for comparison. For general everyday use, we may start with three-fold models. We have also made seven-fold umbrellas, but more folds are not automatically more suitable.

Compare open coverage, closed size, weight and opening action together—not fold count alone. These choices establish the basis of the quote. See our folding umbrella range for model options.

2. Frame construction: compare materials, thickness and workmanship together

The frame is an important cost item and is difficult to judge from photographs. Two similar-looking telescopic shafts may use different materials, tube-wall thicknesses or manufacturing methods.

Frame item What to confirm
Central shaft The material used in each shaft section, not only a general material label.
Tube-wall thickness The actual thickness in millimeters and the exact component or section being measured.
Ribs and support structure The materials and construction of the individual parts; a short label such as “steel frame” may not describe the whole assembly.
Connections Joint and rivet security, alignment and assembly workmanship.
Operation Smooth opening and closing and stable locking on the sample.

With similar materials, dimensions and structure, thicker tube walls generally require more material and may add cost and weight. However, strength also depends on the overall design and assembly. Thickness alone is not a complete quality assessment. If a supplier uses an informal trade unit, convert it into an agreed millimeter value and identify the relevant part.

Does a heavier umbrella mean better quality?

Weight can reveal specification differences, but cannot prove quality by itself. Extra weight might come from the frame, fabric, coating, handle or a larger canopy. A heavier handle does not prove that the ribs are stronger. First align the umbrella type, size and main materials, then compare weight, workmanship and sample performance.

3. Fabric and coating: separate rain protection, shade and UV requirements

“Sun umbrella” or “black-coated umbrella” is not a complete specification. Confirm the canopy fabric, coating system and required performance separately. Two coatings may look or feel different, but appearance alone is not evidence that either meets a particular UV-protection requirement.

  • What is the fabric specification?
  • Which coating will be used, and what does the approved sample look and feel like?
  • If UV protection is required, what performance target and corresponding test evidence are agreed?

Visible-light blocking and UV protection should be checked separately. Do not assume that black color, thickness or an opaque appearance makes two umbrellas equivalent. Match any supplied test report to the material or sample configuration being ordered. For more on canopy selection, read our umbrella fabric guide.

4. Handles and accessories: small parts still affect the quotation

Handles, buttons, rib tips, end caps and sleeves all affect cost and everyday use. Wood and plastic handles are different specifications; even two plastic handles can differ in material, processing and surface finish.

Hold and operate the sample. Check grip comfort, rough edges, handle attachment, button operation and whether the umbrella fits easily into its sleeve. If environmental requirements matter, state the specific material claim and the supporting documentation required. “Eco-friendly handle” alone is too vague for a quotation or an acceptance check.

5. Printing: define the artwork before comparing prices

A small logo on one panel and a full-canopy design are different jobs. Printing costs depend on location, area, colors, process, panel alignment and quantity—not simply whether a logo is included.

Print requirement Information to provide
Small logo on one panel Logo dimensions, position, colors and artwork file.
Repeated logo on several panels Number of printed panels and whether every panel uses the same design.
All-over or full-canopy printing Complete artwork, color requirements and any alignment needed across panel seams.

Sending artwork is more useful than asking for “a printed logo.” If the design is not final, ask the supplier to state the printing assumptions included in the quote. This helps explain any price change when the artwork changes. See our comparison of umbrella printing methods.

6. Actual dimensions: agree on what is being measured

A size shown on a product page may refer to open diameter, canopy arc, rib length or closed length. These are different measurements and cannot be compared directly.

  1. Identify the dimension named in the quotation.
  2. Agree on the measuring method and unit.
  3. Measure the sample using that method and record the result.

Write down the measurement location, method and agreed value. With otherwise similar specifications, a larger canopy generally uses more fabric and may require changes to the frame or accessories. Measure a sample before approval and include the confirmed dimensions in the order specification.

How should buyers compare two custom umbrella quotations?

Put both offers into the same specification sheet. Fill in missing information before comparing the unit prices. The checklist below helps turn “one quote is cheaper” into an explanation of which components or order terms differ.

Comparison item Supplier A Supplier B
Umbrella type, folding format and opening action Record quoted configuration Record quoted configuration
Open and closed dimensions Use the agreed measurement method Use the same measurement method
Shaft, ribs and key frame specifications List materials and relevant dimensions List materials and relevant dimensions
Fabric and coating Identify specification and required evidence Identify specification and required evidence
Handle and other accessories Record included parts and finish Record included parts and finish
Print location, area, colors and process Attach the quoted artwork requirements Attach the same artwork requirements
Quantity and packaging Record units, individual packing and cartons Record units, individual packing and cartons
Tax, freight, sampling charges and lead time State inclusions, exclusions and delivery terms State inclusions, exclusions and delivery terms

For example, a price for one small logo on one panel is not directly comparable with a price including several printed panels. Differences in size, coating and packaging need the same treatment. For a real purchasing example, see how to compare quotes for a 700-piece umbrella order.

Frequently asked questions

What should I provide when requesting my first custom umbrella quote?

Share the intended use, quantity, budget, reference photos or sample, required functions, artwork and delivery destination. Ask the supplier to turn the proposal into a written specification, then check a sample.

Is a three-fold or five-fold umbrella better value?

It depends on the intended use. Compare closed size, open coverage, weight and operation. A higher fold count does not by itself make an umbrella better value.

Why do two black-coated umbrellas have different prices?

Black-coated umbrella is a broad description. Fabric specifications, coating systems, frames, dimensions and accessories can still differ. Confirm each item and the evidence for any requested UV-protection performance.

Why should I approve a sample before production?

A sample lets you check actual dimensions, weight, grip, opening action and print appearance. Record the approved specifications so production and inspection have an agreed reference.

What should I prioritize when my budget is limited?

First define the dimensions, functions and performance requirements that must be met. Then discuss changes to styling, printing and accessories without silently removing essential requirements.
