Why I Added Five Free Umbrellas per Model—Without Being Asked for a Discount
The buyer accepted our umbrella quotation without negotiating. I still decided to add five free umbrellas of each model because the final payment and delivery arrangements meant some anticipated costs did not arise. Sharing part of that saving felt like a practical way to thank the customer while retaining a reasonable profit.
Status as of October 25, 2026: we are preparing the order, including the extra units. Delivery has not been completed. This is a decision for this particular order, not a standard free-goods policy.
The order arrangements at a glance
| Quotation | The buyer accepted the quoted price without bargaining. |
|---|---|
| Payment | RMB payment through the buyer’s representative in China. |
| Our delivery scope | Delivery to a logistics warehouse in Guangzhou, not the entire onward international journey. |
| Extra units | Five additional umbrellas of each model, with no increase in the order payment. |
| Current stage | Order preparation is underway; the extra units are planned to accompany this shipment. |
| Future business | The buyer has expressed interest in future models and orders. No repeat order is confirmed in this account. |
What changed after the quotation?
In my usual quotation process, I leave some room for discussion. This time, the customer accepted the price directly. At the initial discussion stage, the payment currency and delivery arrangements were not yet fully settled. I had allowed for possible bank, currency-conversion and delivery-related costs if payment came in US dollars or euros.
The eventual arrangement was simpler: the buyer paid in RMB through a representative in China, and our responsibility was to deliver the umbrellas to a Guangzhou logistics warehouse. Some costs I had anticipated did not arise, and the delivery steps we needed to handle were fewer.
This describes this transaction only. RMB payments are not universally fee-free, and foreign-currency charges vary by payment route. Warehouse delivery in Guangzhou must not be confused with delivery to the buyer’s overseas destination.
Payment communication: redacted receipt

Why offer five extra umbrellas of each model?
I contacted the buyer to explain that we would add five units of every model free of charge. The order was relatively small, while the selected umbrellas had relatively high unit prices, so the extra pieces represented a meaningful concession for us.
The idea was straightforward: earn a reasonable profit and let the customer benefit from part of the lower actual cost. I did not ask the buyer to place another order in exchange for these units.

Helping the buyer’s business without promising its results
The buyer wanted distinctive umbrella designs that could stand out in the Ukrainian market. That prompted me to consider the customer’s room to operate after receiving the goods, not just the value of our own order.
With the payment unchanged, additional units reduce the average product purchase cost when that payment is spread across the total quantity supplied. The number of models and the full order quantities are not disclosed, so this article does not calculate a total gift quantity or a percentage saving.
That does not guarantee resale profit. Local demand, product selection, sales channels, freight and other operating costs still matter. A goodwill gesture can support a relationship, but cannot prove commercial success.
Explaining the saving mattered as much as offering it
I explained why some anticipated payment costs did not apply under this order’s final arrangement. The buyer thanked us and referred to honesty, trust and mutual respect. They also said their management was pleased to have found us and was discussing possible models for future orders.
Those replies are encouraging, but they are expressions of future purchasing interest—not evidence of a confirmed repeat order or an established long-term partnership. Our immediate responsibility remains preparing and delivering this order as agreed.

Four points buyers and suppliers should clarify
- Payment arrangements: distinguish the agreed currency, payer and actual receipt of funds from estimated charges or a payment notification.
- Delivery responsibility: identify the handover location and who handles the onward journey. A China warehouse and an overseas destination are different scopes.
- The exact extra quantity: record whether an offer applies per model or to the order as a whole. Here it is five per model.
- Execution status: keep a promise, order preparation, dispatch and customer receipt separate. Clear communication does not replace performance.

Frequently asked questions
Why give extra umbrellas when the buyer did not ask for a discount?
Some originally anticipated costs did not arise after the payment and delivery arrangements were finalized. I chose to share part of that saving through additional products.
Was it five umbrellas in total or five of each model?
Five additional umbrellas of each model. The number of models is not disclosed, so no total extra quantity is stated here.
Does every order qualify for five free units per model?
No. This was a case-specific decision based on actual costs and the cooperation circumstances. Other projects need their own agreement.
Does paying in RMB always eliminate bank and exchange fees?
No. Only certain costs anticipated for this order did not arise. Fees depend on the actual payment route and arrangements.
Have the extras been delivered, and has the buyer reordered?
As of October 25, 2026, we are preparing the order with the extra units; delivery is not complete. The buyer has expressed future purchasing interest, but this account does not report a confirmed repeat order.
Reasonable profit and a fair relationship
A business needs a reasonable return for its products, service and operating effort. In this case, I knew some expected costs had not arisen, even if the customer did not know how I had originally calculated the price. Sharing part of that difference was consistent with the way I want to do business.
I want our factory to earn a reasonable profit, and I want the buyer to have room to build their own business. This time, that meant five extra umbrellas per model. The next step is to fulfill the commitment.
