Before visiting an umbrella factory in China, buyers should confirm the actual production location, travel arrangements, workshop access, relevant samples and the supplier’s experience serving their market. A recent inquiry from a Japanese customer illustrates why clear information matters before product specifications or prices are discussed.
This account comes from Aihua Chen at Hand in Hand Umbrella Factory. At the stage described, the customer had expressed an intention to visit after reviewing factory photographs. The visit had not yet taken place, and no order had been confirmed. It is one customer’s experience, not a claim about every Japanese buyer.
A practical pre-visit checklist
| What to check | What to ask the supplier |
|---|---|
| Production location | Is this the factory, office or showroom? What is the exact address? |
| Travel planning | How far is it from your hotel, and how much time should you allow for the return journey? |
| Workshop access | Which production areas can be visited, and what activity is expected on the proposed date? |
| Relevant samples | Can the supplier prepare umbrellas related to your intended application? |
| Cooperation history | Has the supplier served your market directly, through trading companies, or both? |
| Meeting preparation | Who will attend, what questions should be covered, and which requirements can you share beforehand? |
This checklist combines the issues raised in our conversation with practical preparation suggestions. It is not a record of a completed factory audit.
The inquiry started with a search for a factory near Guangzhou
The customer explained that his company president was preparing to travel to China and wanted to visit an umbrella manufacturer. He initially preferred Guangzhou because it suited the itinerary.
I acknowledged that convenience mattered and mentioned an established Guangzhou factory I knew as another option for him to consider. I also explained the journey to our own factory.
For this customer’s hotel departure point, the estimate was approximately 70 kilometres, 1.5 hours each way and three hours for the return trip, excluding time spent at the factory. These were estimates for that particular route, not a standard journey time from every Guangzhou hotel or airport. Actual travel time depends on traffic and the agreed destination.
Hand in Hand Umbrella Factory has business coordination in Guangzhou and our production base in Taoyuan Town, Heshan, Jiangmen, Guangdong. Buyers should confirm whether a proposed meeting address is the office, showroom or production site before arranging transport.
Location is one part of supplier selection
In our discussion, I shared my view that operating in central Guangzhou can involve higher costs. However, location alone does not establish which supplier offers better value.
Buyers still need to compare relevant production capabilities, product suitability, communication and a quotation based on the same specifications. A convenient visit is helpful; it does not replace those checks.

The customer requested production-line, office and showroom photographs
The customer asked for three kinds of photographs:
- Production-line photographs to understand the working environment.
- Office photographs to see the business setting.
- Showroom photographs to understand the product and sample display.
We supplied the requested images. After reviewing them, he said he was satisfied and intended to visit in the following days.
Real photographs help make a supplier’s introduction more concrete. They are still preliminary information: production arrangements, product requirements and cooperation details need further discussion and, where appropriate, an on-site review.

We distinguished direct Japanese orders from trading-company cooperation
The customer asked whether we had previously made umbrellas for Japanese customers.
Our answer was specific: we had not previously accepted orders directly from Japanese customers; our earlier cooperation had mainly been with trading companies, including international trading companies.
Working through a trading company and managing a direct relationship with an overseas buyer are different experiences. We did not present one as proof of the other, or claim a documented Japanese order history that this account does not establish.
We also explained our current direction: building on our manufacturing experience while gradually developing direct cooperation with overseas buyers. The customer said he understood and accepted that explanation.
What our 26 years of umbrella experience means
Hand in Hand Umbrella Factory dates back to 2000. In this 2026 account, 26 years refers to umbrella-making experience—not 26 years of direct export sales.
| Area | Position described in this case |
|---|---|
| Umbrella manufacturing | 26 years of umbrella-making experience in 2026 |
| Earlier business relationships | Mainly cooperation with trading companies, including international trading companies |
| Direct Japanese-customer orders | No previous direct orders at the time of this discussion |
| Current development | Expanding direct cooperation with overseas customers |
| Progress in this inquiry | Photographs reviewed; intention to visit expressed |
| Product and order decisions | No specific umbrella model, quotation or order confirmed |
This distinction helps buyers understand what a supplier has already done and which capabilities or business relationships are still developing.
How to prepare for a useful factory meeting
For buyers planning a similar visit, we recommend sending a short agenda in advance:
- Confirm the destination and schedule. Agree on the production-site address, meeting contact and realistic travel allowance.
- Explain your intended application. Promotional, hotel, retail and other umbrella projects may require different samples. If the specification is not yet decided, say so.
- List the processes and samples you want to see. Ask what can be shown on the chosen day rather than assuming every production stage will be running.
- Separate company background from project approval. A visit provides context; artwork, materials, samples, quality expectations and delivery arrangements still require project-specific agreement.
- Record the next step. This may be a specification brief or sample request, not necessarily an immediate order.
These are suggested preparation steps, not additional claims about what the customer in this case requested or completed.

Frequently asked questions
What should I ask before visiting an umbrella factory in China?
Confirm the actual production address, travel arrangements, accessible workshop areas, relevant samples, meeting agenda and the supplier’s direct or indirect experience with your market.
Are your Guangzhou office and production base in the same location?
Our business coordination is in Guangzhou, while our production base is in Taoyuan Town, Heshan, Jiangmen, Guangdong. Confirm the intended meeting location before travelling.
Does 26 years of manufacturing experience mean 26 years of direct export experience?
No. In this 2026 case, 26 years refers to umbrella-making experience. Direct cooperation with overseas customers is a business direction we are developing.
Had this Japanese customer already visited or placed an order?
No visit or order had been confirmed as completed at the stage described. The customer had reviewed photographs, expressed satisfaction and indicated an intention to visit. Product selection and commercial details remained open.
Can photographs replace a factory visit or sample approval?
No. Photographs support preliminary assessment, but they do not establish that a specific product meets agreed requirements. A visit, project discussion and sample approval serve different purposes.
